Tis the season of the Witch! Like a child counting down to Christmas when December 1st hits, I welcome October and all its spookiness with open and giddy arms. Halloween brings about all sorts of images and ideas and one that never looses its charm is The Witch. I love all things witchy, the history, folklore and stories, pop culture and of course the movies that have a witchy vibe. Here is my top 5 fave movies I like to put on when twirling like Stevie Nicks just isn't enough...
#1 Practical Magic
A cursed bloodline, a murder, a haunting turned possession, a missing persons case and yeah its also a love story.
In a sentence: Family bonding, community acceptance, breaking a cruse and, finding love all become to silver lining after sisters kill an abusive partner and bury the body in the backyard.
What I love: This is one of my go to movies so I love it all but if I had to focus on one particular aspect I adore it would be The Aunts. Frances and and Jet shine with their wisdom and wit and reckless disregard for the rules and boundaries. Don't pretend like you haven't had your own Midnight Margarita session or cast a love spell on unsuspecting family member...
#2 Hocus Pocus
Quintessential Halloween viewing.
In a Sentence: Virgin teen Halloween hater brings back to life child-murdering witches then teams up with his third wheel little sister, a talking cat, a jaded zombie and his crush to save the children of Salem.
What I love: Ummmm did you read my description? What is there not to love? By seriously I think it is a fun movie and everything you want from a Halloween inspired night in. It has the perfect local legend scary story that turns out to be completely true. The witches are genuinely evil in their motivations but clueless in the modern world which makes for an hilarious battle as they try to reclaim their spell book to conjure up a potion that will keep them young (and alive) and all this of course needs to be down before dawn.
# The Craft
Light as a feather, stiff as a board...Light as a feather, stiff as a board...Light as a feather, stiff as a board
In a sentence: Four teenage girls turn to witchcraft instead of therapy leading to death, snakes, baldness and, mental breakdown.
What I love: If you want something more on the thriller side things but also want a bit of teen angst and loved shadowy lit 90's movies this is perfect for your season of the witch viewing. These girls would be the Hogwarts rejects that decided waiting on the Owl Postal Service was a waste of time and they can just invoke the spirit of "Manon" themselves and seek all the revenge and personal gratification they can.
#4 The Blair Witch Project
You'll never look at piles of rocks the same
In a sentence: Three film making students pioneer the "selfie" and document their own demise.
What I love: This film STILL freaks the shit out of me. It was the film that made found footage popular and was done so well many audiences believe it was real. The film is so unnerving because we never see who or what is tormenting the three students and the final scene where filmmaker Heather finds her fellow creator Mike facing the corner (getting chills just writing this) is the perfect mind fuck because if you were paying attention you know what is about to happen.
# The Witches
The early 90's was good for the spooky Anjelica Huston we know and love.
In a sentence: Hell's fury is no match for the bond of grandma and grandson as they take on a conference of witches.
What I love: It is one of Roald Dahl's best (probably my fave) and knowing where it come from you know it is both suitable for children and will have a great element of whimsical creepiness about it. Anjelica Huston is a diabolical The Grand High Witch whose motivations match witchy appearance. For bonus points read the book and watch the film as the reward to complete the joy.
