American Horror Story Season 6 Roanoke just wrapped and I didn’t love it. While there were some elements and ideas that were pretty cool/interesting/terrifying overall it didn’t feel like an American Horror Story Season and as much as I support creative experimentation…this season kinda sucked.
One of main things I love about previous seasons are the attention to characters and giving us big personalities we love or love to hate. Season 6 didn’t feature any characters that really made their mark and due to the shows concept of a show within a show it put a widened the distance between audience and actor. So meh
That ranting inspired this list of American Horror Story characters that left an impression. This list is a little mixed of characters I couldn’t get enough of or most interesting.
#6 James Patrick March (Hotel)
James Patrick March played by Evan Peters is the Hotel Cortez original owner/founder/serial killer. He of course in modern day is dead and still haunts the Hotel with other lost souls. Mr March is positioned as godfather figure to serial killers everywhere with his yearly “Devils Night Dinner” where he is joined by the likes of John Wayne Gacy, Aileen Wuornos and Jeffrey Dahmer to celebrate all thing murderous.
His morbidity was fascinating and his dedication to the art of the killing almost beautiful….almost.
#5 Sister Jude Martin (Asylum)
Sister Jude, I am certain is the character we all came to adore Jessica Lange by. Jessica Lange had a smaller role in the first season Murder House but was put right at the front in Asylum. This was probably my favourite season over all as it was very character driven and everyone had a story to tell. Sister Jude was no different, playing a nun in hiding from her past who now rules over an insane Asylum. She was a tough character and when played to win. As the season goes on we learn more about her past and watch her fall from power but it is her relationships and banter with the other characters that really stand out as she is right in the centre of all the madness this season soaked in.
#4 Dandy Mott (Freak Show)
Dandy Mott played by Finn Wittrock was the character we loved to hate. A spoiled brat bored with his life finds passion in murder and mayhem. The shows undertone was fear of outsides and freaks and made it very clear that it is actually the pretty boy next door you have to worry about the most. Dandy killed without remorse and played on the fact that people could be brought that matched with his kid like temper and his emotional unbalance only made him more horrifying. A son only a mother could love and she did right up until he shot her and turned her into a puppet.
#3 Lana Winters (Asylum)
Lana Winters (Sarah Paulson) of Asylum. I have already spoken about Asylum being the most character driven season and in my opinion having the best overall story arch. This is all fueled by the Lana Winters story. A journalist looking to for a story finds herself locked up in the Asylum because she got to close to discovering something Sister Jude didn't want her to find. Lana is the perfect example of a "normal" person being dropped into a whole range of supernatural and horror filled situations. As a viewer we were locked in the Asylum with Lana as she battled Sister Jude, Bloody Face the serial killer and all the other creepy shit such as Aliens and Possessed Nuns. She appeared briefly in the latest season as later in life Lana has become a crusading TV Journalist in pursuit of truth and lingering silences in TV interviews.
#2 Myrtle Snow (Coven)
I'd like to think there is a little Myrtle Snow dwelling in us all waiting to break out. I'm sure by now you know I love a good character and Myrtle by far has been the stand out character of series. She might appear to be caricature of a person, a weird idea put in the show for some over the top comic banter but I think there is more to Myrtle portrayed brilliantly Frances Conroy than meets the eye. I think to really adore Myrtle you need to watch the season and look out for the role she plays opposite the other leads and her diva wisdom she dishes out to rest of the cast. To sum it up Myrtle was wrongly fully judged and put to death by fire, brought back to life, ushered in the next Supreme Witch of the Coven and then insists she is burned at the stake again.
#1 Liz Taylor (Hotel)
You must be thinking I've mixed this up. I called Myrtle Snow the stand out character of the series but here we are at number 1 with Liz Taylor. Liz Taylor the sassy and fabulous Hotel All Rounder from Hotel is my pick for best character of the series. With Myrtle you learnt I love a good character, I also appreciate good story told well. I give you Liz Taylor. Liz is the only character and I think story line that has viewers or perhaps just me weeping at her final chapter. We learn that Liz was always an outsider in her own life and found her self transformed several times at the Hotel Cortez. Her friendship with Iris (Kathy Bates) and The Countess (Lady Gaga) is flawed and perfect. Again, like with Myrtle go back and re watch. Liz locked up her place at number one with her glorious exit from life to the song "A Ballad for Lucy Jordan", which was already on my funeral wish list.
